AMONG THE CHURCHES

CURRENT NOTES.

Birmingham, Ala. —To see from ten to twenty, and sometimes more, prisoners listening intently to the Christian Science services held in the county jail; to hear their voices unite in singing "Shepherd, show me how to go," and other familiar Christian Science hymns; to note the earnestness displayed in going over the Lesson-Sermons, the almost pathetic avidity with which the teachings of Jesus as exemplified by the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, are received,—would indeed be a revelation to many persons. Several copies of Science and Health, Hymnals, Bibles, Quarterlies, etc., have been furnished the inmates of the jail, and a yearly subscription to The Christian Science Monitor has been paid for; copies of the Sentinel and the Journal are also supplied at frequent intervals, all of which are heartily welcomed, and passed from one to another of the men.

The Christian Science church of Birmingham, under whose auspices these services are held, is truly carrying out the injunction of the Wayshower to carry the true gospel to the poor and the needy, the humble and the suffering, the highways and the byways, even into the prisons. More than one demonstration of the healing power of the truth has been made in the jail, and the whole moral atmosphere seems to have undergone a change for the better.
