"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy...

Minneapolis (Minn.) Tribune

"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy is just what it is designated by her, the text–book of Christian Science, which elucidates her teachings and contains in the "Key to the Scriptures" her interpretation of the spiritual thought expressed in the teachings of the Scriptures. Christian Scientists have just one Bible, the same Bible adopted and used by all Protestant Christian denominations, and the Authorized Version is the one used in the church services and in the homes of Christian Scientists. Mrs. Eddy never designated her text–book as a Bible, nor have Christian Scientists. She claimed and proved that her interpretation of the Bible, as expounded in the text–book, has brought a spiritual light which has enabled her followers to exemplify in a marked and large degree both the letter and the spirit of the precise teachings of Jesus in their entirety, for she demanded of her followers, as did he, that they should not only "preach the gospel," but "heal the sick." It may be called, if you choose, a commentary on the Bible, but was never designated as the Bible, or expected to take the place of it.

Mrs. Eddy taught that man has but one Father–Mother, and that one God, omnipresent and omniscient, infinite Life, Truth, Spirit, Love. Christian Scientists acknowledge toward Mrs. Eddy the relation of faithful followers of a revered Leader in whose life they find a clear exemplification of an honest, sincere, earnest, and successful effort to walk in the footsteps of the Master. Christian Scientists today recognize no leadership but that of Truth, and on this there can be no division. In the life of Mrs. Eddy they apprehend the earnest effort to lead her followers in the pathway of the Christ. In the example of her life and the spirit of her teachings, Christian Scientists are glad to acknowledge a leadership toward the higher things of Spirit.
