I have always enjoyed going to church, but was not able...
I have always enjoyed going to church, but was not able to go often, as my invalidism was the cause of many unthinking and disagreeable remarks being brought to my ears, and so I would sometimes wait until I was very hungry for the word of God before I had courage to go to church again. I was in this hungry state of mind one Sunday morning when a neighbor asked me if I was going to the Christian Science church; if so, we would go together. I had never been to this church before, and the Scripture reading was in process when we arrived. These were the words which greeted me: "I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat." When this reading from the twenty-fifth chapter of St. Matthew was finished, the Lesson-Sermon followed, and it sounded so good, so very good, to me!
On returning home I tried to remember what had been read, but could only recollect that the Lesson had been taken from the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This made me want the book, even though I could not read it, for at that time I could only read in the Primer; so I borrowed it, then looked and looked for a sentence that I could read, before I found this: "God is All-in-all. God is good. Good is Mind" (Science and Health, p. 113). Then I remembered that some one had told me the Bible taught that God created man in His own image and likeness, and without realizing it I kept thinking that if God is Mind, then He knows all things, and if man is His image and likeness, then man can read. These thoughts kept running through my mind from ten o'clock in the morning until four in the afternoon, when I took up the books again and found that I could read without difficulty in both the Bible and Science and Health. In this way I was taught to read by the great Teacher.
I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her discovery that God is Mind, and that Mind's power to teach is as great today as in the time of the prophets.
