[Written for the Sentinel.]

"HE FEEDETH AMONG THE LILIES"

Why feed upon the bread of sorrow,
The bitter griefs, the memories of the past,
When here and now, today and each tomorrow,
Christ giveth thee fresh food to break thy fast?

Why shouldst thou, looking back forever,
Long ceaselessly for that which might have been,
When hope and faith and every true endeavor
Will furnish forth a table yet unseen?

Why wilt thou drink a poisoned fountain,
Or stagnant waters of some salt dead sea?
Seek thou the springs upon the mountain;
Turn thou, and quaff Truth's purity!

Why in dim, ancient forests dally
Amid the phantom fears that haunt the gloom?
See how Love's sunshine fills the valley,
And pure and perfect thoughts like lilies bloom!
