[Written for the Sentinel.]

"DUST TO DUST."

"Dust to dust." The Father's voice
Speaks to the mortal dream. Rejoice
That this alone it is that dies,—
The fear that fails, the law that lies.
No good can ever pass from hence,
What passes is the sleep of sense.

These words, once charged with loss and ill,
Now sing the star-song, Peace, good will;
Transformed by Love that understands,
God's child shall break restraining bands
And rise from earth's obscurity
To grasp man's immortality.

When that last dreaded foe shall fall
Which from the depths defies us all,
Alone the Father knows the hour;
We trust in Truth's transcending power,
And though we see not yet, believe
In our complete and glad reprieve.
