I would like to speak of the physical benefit I have received...
I would like to speak of the physical benefit I have received through Christian Science. In 1907, a few moments after the birth of my first child, the physician, nurse, and all present pronounced death inevitable. When I learned of the fear held, and the sentence passed upon me, I made known my desire for a Christian Science practitioner. In about ten minutes she was present. She came to the bedside, and in a very short time the struggle for life became easier. I then knew that Christian Science could heal physically, but I accepted and desired it more for this than as a religion. When I read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," it was from a sense of duty, and I did not gain the spiritual uplift which I should.
When my oldest child was a little past two years old, it became necessary to choose between Christian Science and materia medica for her help. We chose Christian Science, and the illness was overcome. Then for the first time, through the untiring efforts of the practitioner who had been called, I learned how I should study Christian Science, and distinguish between Truth and error. About one year after the healing of our little girl another child was born. I studied Christian Science with pleasure at this time, and was both physically and mentally helped. Comparing this experience with the birth of my first child, it seemed one of "painless progress" (Science and Health, p. 224).
The mental strength gained is, however, more to me than any bodily strength. Through the study of truth, errors such as temper, deceit, conceit, and selfishness are being overcome. Christian Science is a great help to me in raising my children. The great fear of their contracting diseases supposedly common among children is passing away from me.
