A sense of deep gratitude impels me to testify to several instances of healing in our family through Christian Science. In September, 1909, our boy, then an infant, became afficted with a swelling on the knee. I was not acquainted with Christian Science at the time, and so took him to a physician with the expectation of finding relief; but his verdict was by no means reassuring, as he said that a serious operation would have to be performed. I returned home in a state of anxiety, and on the following day went to the hospital in Interlaken with the child, who was only six weeks old, and who presented a poorer appearance than he did the first week after his birth. The professor there, after a lengthy examination, came to the same conclusion as our local physician, namely, that there was inflammation of the kneecap, and that the child was tuberculous; but that he could not operate before the age of three months. He advised me to leave the boy at the hospital until that time, for in his opinion it was an unusual case, and he also said that the child should be well fed. I took the little one home with me, however, thinking that I might as well give him the proper nourishment and care; but constant vomiting set in, and he only retained enough food to keep him alive, while he seemed to suffer greatly and was at rest neither day nor night.

I then made a trial of another medical system, which seemed to bring some relief, and lessened the vomiting, but a discharge from the knee suddenly set in. Four weeks later I again went to see physician, as the knee presented a swollen appearance, which had increased, whereas I had expected that it would heal. The physician said that I should not wait any longer, but should come to the hospital with the child that same day. When I refused, he said that the boy would be crippled, for the knee-joint had ceased to be movable; that the leg might even have to be amputated. My distress about the child was so great that I would rather have seen him die than go through all this suffering.

Then my attention was fortunately called to Christian Science, and I went to a practitioner, though with a sorrowful heart. She lovingly took up treatment, and I returned home in an entirely changed frame of mind and with new hope. On the first evening the child was able to sleep quietly, and the vomiting recurred but rarely after that. Since his birth we had had to keep a light burning all night, bur from the time we went to the practitioner it was no longer needed. After a couple of weeks his looks had improved, and he gradually began to move his leg, though the discharge had not quite stopped. The healing was so quick and wonderful that at one year of age he was as big and strong as children of his age who have always been well. With the sixteenth month he was able to run about securely and confidently, and there was not the slightest indication of his ever having been afficted.
