Those only are confused respecting the teaching of Christian Science...
Simpson's Leader
Those only are confused respecting the teaching of Christian Science as to death who choose to ignore the explicit distinction made between spiritual manhood and the man of material sense. The phenomenon of the physical body's resolution back into its native elements of earth is no more denied in Christian Science than is any other phase of material existence. Most intelligent systems of thought agree that what is laid in the grave is not the man. All Christian denominations, and nearly all other religions and philosophies, hold the real man to be endowed with eternal life. When would-be critics see that this is the man referred to by Christian Science as not subject to death, there will be less frequent displays of gross ignorance among those who undertake to discuss Christian Science publicly. Mrs. Eddy has a perfect right to say that the spiritual qualities of real manhood never have died and never will die, and no one can truthfully say she has attempted to teach anything inconsistent with that statement.
The platform of an emotional revival is a strange place from which to venture an assertion that the happiness of Christian Scientists is of the nature of an intoxication. Happiness in Christian Science is the result of growth in knowledge of the facts of being, a knowledge born not of ephemeral ecstasy, but of the sober, conscientious, painstaking application of laws and rules which no trifler may apprehend but which any earnest seeker may acquire and use. Christian Science makes religion practical and provable here and now. It appeals to right-minded persons because it offers release from superstition as well as from sickness and sin. It is today the most effective means through which the material law of the supremacy of good over evil is being made increasingly operative in the affairs of men. It is gently and quietly, but none the less surely, revolutionizing the world, and those who are conscious of having part in this great work have abundant and substantial reason to be happy.
