CAUSE AND EFFECT

In the marvelous unfoldment of Christian Science we learn that cause and effect are spiritual, not material, and the claim of mortal mind that they pertain to matter, evil, and false mentality, is untrue and therefore already obsolete.

Believing that cause and effect are material, one might say, "I have been sitting in a draft and have taken cold;" or, "I have eaten something which has disagreed with me, and consequently am sick;" or, "I have disobeyed the laws of nature, and must die." Believing that the carnal mind embraces within itself both cause and effect, another might say, "I have been angry and am ill;" "I have been afraid, and 'the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me';" "I am suffering from the thoughts of others," "I am sinning and enjoying it," or "I have sinned and must die." Here Christian Science comes to the rescue, healing them that are in bondage to these false beliefs, and proving true the concept of being which Mrs. Eddy has set forth on page 207 of Science and Health: "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause."

Every alert Christian Science practitioner is no less watchful in guarding his own thought and the thoughts of his patients against acknowledging and accepting cause and effect in evil and in mortal mind, than he is in destroying the belief of cause and effect in matter. His only remedy for every ill is the truth which Jesus said would make us free. Hence the power and invulnerability of Christian Science and of all which rests upon and proceeds from its purely spiritual and scientific basis.
