Recently, upon reading some particularly interesting testimonies of healing, I recalled these words from our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more" (p. 3). It is in response to this admonition that the following testimony is gratefully given.

All my life I had suffered from disorders of the stomach and digestive organs,—a condition shared more or less by every member of the family and accepted as an inheritance,—and as years went by these conditions were so aggravated that my diet had been reduced almost to the vanishing point. The most powerful drugs, as well as other means, were resorted to in the hope of restoring normal action, but with no result. The physical suffering was intense, the mental even greater, an increasing despondency having reached a state of indescribable torment, and it was generally expected that my lease of life had but a short time to run. I also had a skin disease, affecting the scalp, which had already caused quite a large bald spot to appear, with further loss of hair occurring daily. I had long worn glasses for defective vision, and was addicted to the use of tobacco and intoxicants, both habits of many years' standing and having a firm hold upon me, particularly the latter.

To describe the various means tried for relief would require a volume, and include the treatments by many physicians of different schools, besides well-nigh every "cure" that I might have heard or read about, and the crisis above mentioned found me without a single straw to grasp in the way of material help. It was then, when every hope had seemingly gone, that Christian Science (which had several times been mentioned to me by loving friends, only to be rejected with the arrogance of mortal wisdom, as a fad) came to the rescue. One day, in relating my experiences to the nurse attending me regarding my search for relief, Christian Science was mentioned, when he told me about a case where he had been in attendance and a Christian Science practitioner had been called in with some wonderful results. After asking him a few questions a sudden inspiration seized me, and I cried: "I am going to try it! Go at once for a practitioner, and at the same time call upon the doctor, tell him what I have concluded to do, and say that I shall not need him any more."
