[Written for the Sentinel]

Healing

A sacred hush, a warmth of peace,
A vision seen that eyes ne'er knew!
Perplexing claims of error cease,
Earth fades, — heaven opens to the view!

Yet darkness filled your thought before,
Nor shone a single star of hope.
How harsh the fetters that you wore!
How vainly did you onward grope!

Forgotten now. As from a dream,
You woke to morning's happy light;
Fled is the mist that late did seem,
And life's horizon opens bright.

A word has done this, but a word
That bade you from the error turn:
In silence spoke, in heart was heard,
And oh, how deeply did it burn!

How deep within your wakening heart,
That to the Father turned and sighed,
And would from error's ways depart!
Love heard you when you humbly cried.

And heard you then Truth's message sweet
With gladness, and, rejecting sense,
Did kneel and listen at Love's feet:
All this your priceless recompense!
