The Chronicle

In a recent issue I notice with pleasure the Bishop of Manchester's remarks on Christian Science. The kindly spirit displayed by the bishop is undoubtedly worthy of a man in his position. He feels, however, that Christian Scientists should go a step farther, and look not only at the God within them but at the Christ within them. The bishop will undoubtedly be pleased to know that Christian Scientists realize in the fullest sense that God can be understood only through His Christ, or divine manifestation.

The teachings of Christian Science are very explicit on this point, and clearly show that man can be saved only through what St. Paul calls, "Christ in you, the hope of glory;" and they claim and prove that the Christ within consciousness is able today to heal the sick and the sinner, just as Jesus did nineteen hundred years ago. In the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 496), it is written: "Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being." Christian Scientists therefore recognize very clearly that Christ is indeed the Way.

The bishop also spoke of a very acute philosopher who had made a great study of Christian Science. As Christian Scientists we have discovered that it does not need a philosopher to understand Christian Science, but a Christian, and he alone, indeed, can understand it. Our Saviour's teachings were most fully understood and demonstrated, not by philosophers of that day but by a few Christly-minded fishermen. Indeed, the philosophers seemed quite unable to comprehend his teachings.
