In August, 1909, a friend invited me to attend the Christian Science church, which I did with skepticism and without any thought of becoming interested. I had, until five years previous, been a member of an orthodox church, but through lack of interest had fallen away never to return. Christianity did not appeal to me as taught in the churches; it seemed a matter of form without any "staying power," a religion for Sunday only. I tried to understand that God gave me life, but the Bible as explained from the pulpit seemed so contradictory that I utterly failed to comprehend it. Mortal existence seemed an incomprehensible enigma, and I was left like a ship on a reef, with the storms of error beating upon it.
I was a partial wreck physically and morally, and it was in this condition that I accompanied my friend and his family to the Sunday morning service in a beautiful little church which seemed to say to me, "Stranger, come in." My hungering heart responded with gratitude, and there I found the peace "which passeth all understandings," a peace I never knew before; buf in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy we read the testimony of Spirit, which saith, "Man, whose senses are spiritual, is my likeness... I give life, without beginning and without end, for I am Life" (p. 252). Here I was being led into the understanding of man's divine rights, and to settle the question for all time I attended the evening service, which gave me such spiritual uplift that I decided to see a practitioner. I did so, and the practitioner explained the teaching of Christian Science so eloquently that I decided to have help, and after the first treatment my desire for liquor had completely gone, and after one month's treatment I was healed of the tobacco habit and other habits, besides some minor ailments. I was loaned a copy of Science and Health, but I soon procured one of my own, and after a diligent study I proved to myself beyond any doubt that Christian Science is a true religion, one which healeth all our diseases. We have had many demonstrations in our home,—fever has been cured; my daughter, seven years of age, had her face scalded so badly that a neighbor said she would be disfigured for life, but because we knew the truth the child was out playing in fifteen minutes, and in two days no scar could be seen.
Apart from the physical healing, I am very grateful to Christian Science for the spirituality which has lifted me above "the false testimony of the material senses" (Science and Health, p. 268). I turn to God with gratitude for giving us Christian Science through our revered Leader, who expounded her knowledge in the precious volume which is truly a "Key to the Scriptures." I pray for that Mind to be in me "which was also in Christ Jesus," so that I may be a help to others.
