In 1906 my condition was diagnosed as a serious affliction of the nervous system, and it is well known what that implies. This was after different physicians and nerve specialists had been patiently and hopefully tried for years, only to be found wanting. Then in a Carnegie library in a strange city I found a Christian Science Journal, and before I finished reading it I sent for a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which I have been studying ever since. The disease gradually faded away into its native nothingness, but there were times when its seeming tenacity was remarkable. At such times, however, treatment was applied for and the mental stress was overcome.
The nothingness, the powerlessness of any threatening evil is daily becoming more obvious to me, and I have even been helped to a clearer vision of spiritual reality by realizing that there is no vacuum in divine Love. (See Science and Health, p. 266.) Pondering this over, I perceived as never before that evil cannot exist, unless there were a vacuum in divine Love, and such is inconceivable. To those who have helped me in all ways, the editors, contributors, and writers of testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals, above all to our Leader, whose immeasurable devotion to humanity made our promised freedom an actual dominion, I feel a joyful and ever increasing sense of gratitude.
