I had been in an isolated place for many months
I had been in an isolated place for many months. The novelty of camp life five thousand feet above the sea-level, with the Rocky mountains in sight, had tempted me to separate myself temporarily from former associations and surroundings, a little girl nine years old being my only companion. While perfect health was realized, interest in the experience was unflagging, but one day I was taken with an alarming condition of the bowels, which continued for weeks, growing first better and then worse. Absent treatment in Christian Science failed to remove the trouble, though I was wonderfully sustained and felt calm and confident; but the time came when I felt I could not attend to the duties of camp life another day. I decided to pack my trunk and go to Denver, the nearest large city, that I might avail myself of present treatment and the care that from a human standpoint seemed absolutely necessary.
As I started to pack my trunk, the thought came to me, clearer than ever before, "All that you can find of Love anywhere, is right here." I walked to the door and looked out across the lonely expanse of country. There appeared no chance of my human need being met there, and I was too weak to make any further effort to help myself, while the packing of the trunk and the trip to Denver seemed impossible; but slowly over the hill came a covered carriage in which were two ladies, one of whom I had met before, the other a stranger. To make a long and beautiful story short, the stranger was a Christian Scientist who had been away on a trip, and having just returned to the country, had driven out to see me.
After I had talked with her a little while, I asked her if she would spend the night with me. "Oh," she said, "I came with the intention of taking you home with me." And this sister who appeared in the wilderness in the hour of my greatest need, got my supper for me and helped me pack my bag, then took me home with her and cared for me two weeks; but better than the care, she had such a clear understanding of Christian Science that through her awakening treatment I was completely healed of the bowel trouble in a few days.—Gertrude Smith, Santa Rosa, N. Mex.
