[Written for the Sentinel.]

JUDAS

For thirty bits of silver stamped as coin
Our Master was betrayed by one who knew
And walked with him along the way;
But walked and talked as sleeper in a dream.
The words of Life, the light, the living Truth,
Came not to Judas till, too late, he saw
His Lord betrayed for dross of worldly gain.
And here today, where'er for lust or power
Or selfish aim the truth is sold
And honor bartered, Judas still betrays.

To one awake to Love and Love's demands,
The Judas thought comes not. It cannot face
The watchful angel guard with flaming sword
Which none can pass save those who ever wear
The garments white of chastity and love,
And walk with him who blessed the pure in heart
And said of them that they alone see God.
