I desire to acknowledge the many benefits received...
I desire to acknowledge the many benefits received through Christian Science. Twelve years ago, after suffering over two years with a stomach disorder, I finally became so ill that I was confined to bed. I had not been able to eat solid food in a long time and suffered great distress, so that I finally could not swallow even liquids. I did not know which way to turn for relief, when my maid asked me to try Christian Science. (She had been healed by it in a few treatments.) I had never even heard of it before, but I grasped at it eagerly, for it sounded good to me and gave me hope. I used to ask these questions: To what and where do you raise your heart when in despair; and wished I could know what God really means, and my searching after Truth brought me to the threshold of Christian Science.
A practitioner was sent for, and I was relieved of pain in one treatment. I was told to eat what was set before me, as it could not distress me. I arose from bed and ate of a hearty meal with the rest of the family, and suffered no discomfort. I did not question the possibility that God was an ever-present help, and I then found the "pearl of great price." I had also suffered from inflamed eyes and could not see to read, but after one present and one absent treatment I was free from pain. We immediately sent for a copy of Science and Health, and oh, the joy when the book came and I could read! I continued to read and study the truth in this blessed book, and was so full of gratitude and peace that I could hardly believe it would last. Sleeplessness, heart trouble, extreme nervousness, all left me, also many other troubles were overcome.
Later I had what was to me another beautiful demonstration of Truth's power. One day I stepped on a large rusty nail, which penetrated my foot, as I wore a thin shoe. My fear became great, but I immediately sent for the practitioner, who came and treated me. When she left I retired, wishing to get some sleep. I was suffering terribly, and my limb was swollen and discolored. The week previous two persons had passed on in our city from a similar cause, but I clung to God and knew He would not desert me. Next morning I awoke refreshed, and found that the pain in my limb was gone and the swelling also. I then arose, and gave thanks to God for this wondrous work that had again been shown me, the power of Truth to overcome error.
