That which appeals most strongly to me in the religion...

That which appeals most strongly to me in the religion that Christian Science unfolds is its common sense, logical reasoning, demanding proof of propositions, and the ideally beautiful heights to which it leads one, the daily incentive to dwell upon those heights far above the mists of materiality. For three years I have studied this glorious truth as taught in Science and Health, and to me it is the pearl of great price. My heart is filled with thankfulness to our Leader, to whom some day the world will render due praise and gratitude. It is difficult to tell of the manifold blessings that have been mine by realizing the allness of God, and the nothingness of evil in its varied manifestations.

Once I poured some boiling water over my fingers, and instantly I began to repeat the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). There was no pain, and the slight redness soon faded out. There was no sensation at all. One day my twelve-year-old son came in from school apparently very ill. He lay down in an adjoining room, and I at once began to declare the unreality of all that is not of God, good; to assert man's dominion as his God-given heritage, and his freedom. In ten minutes the boy called, "Mother, I am well, and I am going back to school;" which he did, to the great surprise of all. By absent treatment, hundreds of miles away, this boy was taken through a severe malarial attack, which lasted three weeks, accompanied by a very bad cough. I had then been studying Science only a year. Recently my eleven-year-old son had the nail taken entirely off one toe, but the next day he fished, climbed a mountain, etc., feeling no inconvenience. The healing was most rapid. Both boys have made demonstrations for themselves.

The light thrown upon the Bible has given me a clear understanding of God as Love, Spirit, Soul, Principle; as ever present and all powerful; not as a mighty judge to be feared, in some far-off region. I recognize in Christ Jesus our great Exemplar and Wayshower, not a personal Saviour who by giving his life on the cross atoned for all sin. I have been made free from so many ills, mental and physical, that to me all things have become new. To be made well when one was always tired and ill, means much, but the spiritual awakening to a knowledge of the truth which leads to eternal life,—what words can express it!
