In recalling my first visit to a Christian Science practitioner,...

In recalling my first visit to a Christian Science practitioner, the following conversation comes to me: "I have no faith that I can be healed." The practitioner remarked kindly: "You must have some faith or you would not have come." My reply was, "I don't think you can help the physical condition, but I do believe you can help me to overcome the fear of disease." The illness from which I was suffering was to sense a very serious lung trouble. I had been told some months previous that I would have to go out West; so the thought came to me to try Christian Science, though at the time I knew little about it.

Like many others, I thought it was all right for so-called nervous diseases, but that when it came to any organic trouble it would be of no avail. I wish to add right here that in my case the so-called organic disease was overcome in a very short time, while a nervous condition was slow in yielding. In five treatments I was healed of the lung affection—with cough, night-sweats, and great weakness. I shall never forget my first treatment; the whole world seemed to be transformed, and I felt as if I could never "see evil any more." Since that time I have had to come down from those heights, and step by step travel the road from sense to Soul. I have also been healed of a chronic stomach affection and of chronic weakness of the bowels in a few treatments. Before coming into Christian Science I was constantly using some material remedy; now I have found God to be my strength. This truth came to me in what seemed the darkest hours of my life. The testimonies in our periodicals have been such a help and encouragement, when doubts and fears seemed to surround me.

While I am grateful for the physical healing, I am still more grateful for the spiritual quickening, for the elimination of wrong thoughts, such as hatred, revenge, jealousy, and their like. The nervous condition is gradually yielding, and a recent proof of God's power was the healing of a badly injured ankle. I had a few treatments, and the first day was able to keep an appointment, though I did not put my whole weight on the foot, and on the fifth day I walked naturally. This meant a great deal to me, having had a similar experience in the old thought, when I was not able to use the foot at all for over a week.
