CHRISTIAN SCIENCE, AN ASSET

Forty years ago a faithful, truth-seeking woman listened to the utterance of the "still small voice," and opened the door of her heart to the call of despairing humanity, seeking for freedom from sin and suffering. She then gave to the world an idea which has revealed the activity of Life as God, and made the realization of good possible for every man here and now. This has changed thousands of sufferers into healthful, happy beings, with smiling faces and kind words for all they meet, and has awakened the downtrodden and sinning to a recognition of their present possibilities, instead of leaving them to suffer mentally in the belief that there is no hope, no health for them in this world. Here was a woman who had found a great truth, and in her longing to share it with all others, she cried as did the apostle Paul, "men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defense which I make now unto you."

We have only to look back a little into history to find that all who have discovered something really great have experienced much difficulty, at first, in bestowing their gift upon the world, and Mrs. Eddy was no exception to the rule as she labored for our good to place Christian Science before us. But she knew then, as we know now, that her discovery had the stamp and seal of God and eternity set upon it, and failure was a word that found no place either in her thoughts, her teaching, or her writings. We need not ask, today, if Christian Science has succeeded in its purpose, or if the effort to give it to humanity has been worth while, for we have but to look about us to find the results of Mrs. Eddy's great work.

If we happen to know a business or professional man who has found the way as taught in Christian Science, and go into his office, we note how different is the atmosphere found there from that which we meet in other places. If we ask him what he considers the most valuable asset in his business undertakings, he will tell us that it is Christian Science, which is truly the business man's religion, one that he can take with him and live anywhere, everywhere, as well as one that he cannot live without. He will tell us that theory may be good, but that practice is better and more helpful, and that his is a religion which has shown him how to demonstrate continual happiness and practical success each hour. In so far as he has realized and expressed the spirit of Christian Science, he has learned that heaven, harmony, and home mean one and the same thing, while need and supply are practically synonymous terms, because he has found that he knows no need which is not already supplied by divine Mind. As he recognizes his need, he turns to infinite Mind, and there finds his supply awaiting him. He has eliminated worry and fear of failure from his routine of business duties as most necessary, since he is now making practical use of the promises of Christ Jesus, which he had read many times in a thoughtless, careless manner before Christian Science came into his life and taught him the difference between the mortal and the spiritual concept of man.
