Portland (Ore.) Oregonian
If our critic's teachings border, as he says, on both those of Christian Science and a movement which advocates the use of drugs with prayer, it necessarily follows that his ideas are a combination of opposites which find no amalgamation either in logic or application, since Christian Science is as far removed from this movement as the divine will upon which Christ's teachings were based is removed from the human, hypnotic self-will.
Our critic is said to have given many instances of the cures that have yielded to treatment according to the teachings of Jesus Christ as practised by himself. We take it for granted that any one who claims to practise the same system as that taught by another must follow without deviation the rule or law of that system. Jesus never commended material methods of any kind, neither did he admit any limitation or specification as to the healing power of God, but on the other hand he did heal "all manner of diseases." Nor did the hostility or indifference of the church to the gospel of healing ever interfere with his cures. Therefore, we question our critic's authority for claiming his ideas to be based upon the Christ-method which today has been brought to humanity through Christian Science as an operative, practical manifestation of God.
We are glad that the good which Christian Science has accomplished is acknowledged and that it is admitted to be God's will. Since the latter statement is true, this good must come through God, and this, as well as the fact that all good is positive, will relieve one from any doubt as to whether Christian Science produces good in a negative way rather than through the understanding and application of its divine Principle to every human problem.
