In the death of Mrs. Eddy the world loses a woman who has been a very important influence in the uplifting of humanity. She has, during her lifetime, converted millions to her doctrines, and all over the country the effects of her teachings are visible. Among her adherents today are many who feel convinced that through her they have been cured of serious diseases, that their lives morally as well as physically have been bettered by reading her books and learning her theories and carrying them out, and although she has encountered much opposition from some of the older denominations in the advancement of her ideas, yet they have prevailed, and there are many who feel that the world is brighter and the future more promising because they have known of her, and have believed in the views that she has expressed. Among her followers are many whose lives have been completely changed as the result of her teachings and practising them, and they will hold her memory forever sanctified. No recent religious movement has spread more rapidly or can point to more substantial results, and this fact emphasizes the force of her doctrines and the vitality of her creed.

In Mrs. Eddy the United States has lost one of its most valuable citizens and the world one of its most philanthropic and broad-minded women. The recent death of Tolstoi suggests a comparison between the two, for both were engaged in trying to elevate humanity, but while the Russian was always pessimistic and saw only the somber side of things, this good woman saw only bright side and sought to accomplish her mission with tears, but with smiles; not by sad prophecies for the future, but by giving to the world brighter and better hopes and truer ideas of happiness, both on this side of the grave and on the other.
