I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science by telling of some of the great blessings that have come to me. I used to be very antagonistic to what I thought was Christian Science, even threatening to leave my wife if she had anything to do with it. Ever since I can remember I had been taking medicine, and about ten years ago I underwent a severe surgical operation, from which I received only temporary relief. About two years later my nervous system began to break down. I had a great many doctors treat me, but steadily grew worse, until in March, 1904, I was at the point of giving up my work. I became so desperate that I surprised my wife by asking her to write to her sister, who is a Christian Science practitioner, to give me treatment; which she gladly did. I continued taking treatment for about two weeks, and was completely healed. I have taken no medicine from the day of my first treatment up to the present time.
I had been a slave to the tobacco habit for sixteen years, both chewing and smoking. I had taken nearly all of the so-called cures, and several times had tried to quit by willpower, but without any success. About two months after my healing in Christian Science I was prevailed upon to attend a Christian Science lecture. I became so filled with the truth which I heard, the inspiration of Life and Love, that I was raised out of mortal darkness into such a spiritual awakening that the desire for tobacco left me. I have never since for an instant had any craving for it, and my health is better in every way than at any previous time in my life. For these great blessings and many others, for the desire which I have to grow more spiritual every day, for the freedom and great rejoicing which I experience, for the protecting care and guidance of divine Mind,—for all these I am indeed thankful to God, and to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
