For forty consecutive years I was addicted to the use...
For forty consecutive years I was addicted to the use of tobacco in all of its forms, even to the vile habit of cigarette smoking. I did not consider the use of tobacco injurious to my health, as I was always apparently healthy, and had no desire to discontinue its use. About six years ago I became interested in Christian Science, and purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The first time I opened this book I read until one o'clock in the morning. It appeared so marvelous to me, and was so different from anything I had ever heard of, that my attention was held with the greatest interest. The following evening I again took up this book, and so continued until I had read it through. During its reading the desire for tobacco left me completely. A member of my family noticed that I had discontinued smoking and inquired why. My answer was that I had no desire to smoke, as I had lost the taste for it. From that time I have never had the least desire to use tobacco, although daily thrown in contact with friends who use it and who frequently invite me to join them.
Having always been physically robust, demonstrations for me in that respect have been limited, but I may speak of an accident which befell me recently: I arose one night to go to the room of an invalid nephew. I had only a few nights before changed my room, and instead of going directly to his room I mistook the way and walked to the head of the stairs and fell headlong down twenty steps to the landing. I immediately realized God's protecting power, got up and went back up-stairs, and although I weigh over two hundred pounds I had not sustained the slightest injury. Surely divine Love does protect us by night as well as by day. I have also received many other blessings from the knowledge which I have received of Christian Science, for all of which I am indeed grateful.
