About five years ago, when Christian Science was but...
About five years ago, when Christian Science was but a name to me, I began questioning as to what Christ Jesus meant by the "Spirit of truth" which he said he would send to us. I prayed earnestly about it, and began searching the Scriptures for enlightenment. I could not understand why the beautiful promises which the Bible contained were not for this day and age. I was at this time an active church member, part of the time able to attend to my duties, but more often unable to do so, having been a sufferer for many years from stomach, bowel, and nervous troubles, also from a bronchial affection which was supposed to be hereditary, although I had tried every remedy that I could hear of, to no avail. I had also had experience, as it seemed, with almost every disease that flesh is heir to, as every member of my family had passed on, afflicted with some dread sickness. While in the midst of this overwhelming sea of despair and discouragement, I was led to Christian Science through the statement of a friend whose wife had been wonderfully healed, although she had gone to church from mere curiosity. I began to make inquiry, and one day, about two and a half years ago. I found myself in the Christian Science Reading Room. I asked some questions of the lady in charge, who advised me to get a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, read it. and see what it would do for me. I purchased the book with a great deal of trepidation, but by getting some understanding of its teaching, the bowel, stomach, and nervous troubles were healed, also a yen pernicious habit of worry. Then I indeed learned what the blessed promises in the Bible meant, and what our Saviour meant when he said, "I will send you another Comforter."
Words are inadequate to express sufficiently my gratitude to a good and loving Father, who sent His beloved Son to be the Wayshower to us; and later on, our dear Leader, whose spiritual illumination has again brought to light the teachings of the Master. It is through a clearer understanding of the Bible that I can best show my deep gratitude, consecrating myself to God and striving each day to live nearer and follow closer the truth that makes free.—Sarah C. Lockwood, Indianapolis, Ind.
