"Some people yield slowly to the touch of Truth" (Science and Health, p. 450)...
"Some people yield slowly to the touch of Truth" (Science and Health, p. 450). For more than three years I read Science and Health and smoked my pipe night and morning. In the early fall of 1900 my wife urged our application for membership in The Mother Church, but I opposed it, thinking we had better wait until the next June. As we had always gone together in everything, it was a great trial for her finally to decide to proceed without me, and things seemed all wrong with me, without my being able to tell why. One evening I was reading and smoking, when I suddenly realized that it was the smoking habit which made me refuse to send in my application. I was thinking over this, and carelessly turning the pages of Science and Health, when these words on page 192 caught my attention: "We are Christian Scientists, only as we quit our reliance upon material things, and grasp the spiritual. We are not Christian Scientists until we leave all for Christ." That decided the matter and my application went as soon as it could be mailed. I knew I could not stop smoking in my own strength, for I had tried and failed too many times, but by relying upon Truth, the habit was overcome in three days, indeed it was offensive to me. I had none of the awful pangs which smokers talk about, and I had no desire to smoke. It was very startling, very convincing, and very uplifting, for I had been a slave to tobacco for more than twenty-five years. For more than seventeen years I had depended on glasses for sight, but since Jan. 5, 1903, I have depended on God for sight and the result has been most satisfying. I have never needed glasses since. My wife and I are both enjoying the best of health.
Words fail to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for all she has done and is doing to show mankind the way out of slavery. It gives me great joy to turn every one who is seeking the truth to Science and Health, knowing that the right message is there to meet every need.
