In February, 1895, I became ill with the grip; and as I had previously suffered from the same ailment without any serious effects resulting therefrom, I purchased some quinine and proceeded to doctor myself. After a few days the symptoms of grip were overcome; but I then became subject to nervous paroxysms which I thought resulted from having taken too much of the drug. The paroxysms were accompanied with much dread; they depressed me greatly, and completely unfitted me for business while they lasted. I soon placed myself under the treatment of an experienced medical practitioner, by whom I was treated for nine months, during which time I gradually grew weaker and less able to resist the paroxysms, which were occurring with increasing frequency.
Late in November, I became so weakened that I lost hope of help from medical treatment; but I thought a change of climate and work might benefit me. This was not convenient at the time, and at the solicitation of friends, I reluctantly turned to Christian Science for help; but with little hope of its healing me, because I was an agnostic. I had never before been able to glean anything helpful from my conception of religion.
For several weeks I had been unable to sleep without first taking a sedative. The evening I resolved to give Christian Science a fair trial, after receiving a treatment I threw my medicine away; and that night I slept soundly and awakened in the morning feeling more refreshed than I had at any time for months.
