Some time ago, through the help I received from an article in the Sentinel, the true sense of substance was demonstrated to me. Last year I accepted a position which involved both responsibility and the expenditure of money, and one which, previous to my gaining some knowledge of Christian Science, I had always regarded with fear. Shortly after this a business circumstance opened up the way for me to meet some people against whom I was prejudiced and whom I would rather have avoided. It was quite optional whether I should accept the arrangement or not, but I had an instinctive consciousness that I should not refuse. My whole desire was to be obedient to Truth, and governed by this desire I took each step as I saw it, but there was only a sense of duty in my thought, not of love.
When the Sentinel dated May 7, 1904, arrived, I commenced to read it. It contained a report of the National Christian Science Association Meeting, held in Chicago in 1888. I read the article through and it worked a miracle in my thought. As I studied it, — especially the description of Mrs. Eddy's appearance at this gathering, — the scene came before me very vividly. Material sense was hushed. I saw the humility, selflessness, and love of our revered Leader as never before, and a new sense of love was present with me. No words can express the influence which touched my thought as the first verse of "The Mother's Evening Prayer" by Mrs. Eddy (Miscellaneous Writing, p.389) came to me. All the prejudice and dislike respecting the business associates which had troubled me, vanished like mist.
The next day, Monday, I met the people to whom I have referred, and only love was expressed between us. Soon after a considerable portion of my income was unavoidably stopped through another's loss. This caused me to work very earnestly in the truth, for I needed what seemed to have been taken from me. On the Wednesday morning, by the first post, I received a letter telling me that much pleasure had been felt at my visit of Monday, and putting into my hands more than sufficient to supply the loss I had just sustained. I knew immediately that I had seen the fulfilment of the Scripture, "Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." My gratitude and gladness of heart were very great, and I could but feel that the love which I felt in reading the article in the Sentinel had indeed brought out the proof that divine Love is substance
