Letters to our Leader

Douglaston, Long Island, September 25, 1905.

Dear Mrs. Eddy:—My heart goes out to you to-day in great waves of gratitude on reading your words in the Sentinel about "Watching." I feel as though a searchlight had been turned on my life and work, and that I can never escape or want to escape from those clear beams again. I had seen that a mortal sense of peace was a treacherous companion, but had not seen that it was a desire for mortal peace and ease that was at the root of the evil. In trying to destroy a sense of fear I had not seen that it might be the result of a longing for "Peace, peace; when there is no peace." All that this line of thought opens up to me, in the light of Jesus' sayings and in the teachings of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," should make me consecrate my life anew, and realize that the only title a thief has to being a thief, lies is his stealing in unawares. If he came and said, "I am a thief," he would find no opportunity to steal. With a heart full of love and gratitude that I am watching sufficiently to get a wonderful message of yours when it is given, and knowing that "Watching" is my best way of expressing gratitude to you, I am

Faithfully and lovingly yours,
CHARLOTTE H. FOSTER.
