Over six years ago my father, who was then living in another State, wrote, asking me to try Christian Science treatment. I, however, hesitated for two months, until our little girl, who was at that time suffering intensely from ear trouble, became so bad that I almost despaired of her recovery, as nothing we could do gave her any relief. We then wrote to a Christian Scientist, and as she was nearly one thousand miles away it seemed a long time to wait for help from such suffering. The same day that the practitioner received our letter, help came, although the gathering on the outside did not discharge for two days.
I had worked earnestly in a church for years, trying to show others a better way, and then believed that I loved God and trusted Him. When the practitioner wrote me that if I would remove the bandages from the little girl's head, and trust God, she would not take cold, I said, "I will trust God;" but when she was better, and wanted to run out without a wrap or rubbers, and to wade in the snow, I had to turn away and try to see that God is the only power. I cannot describe my feelings at such times. I felt I had been a hypocrite, for I trusted Spirit, God, scarcely at all. Only the power of good could have removed the awful fears I had. For several days this battle had to be fought, until my fears were gone and I could leave her in God's hands. I had a copy of the Journal and some other Christian Science literature, which I read almost constantly, trying to see how God heals the sick. In one week we were both healed—I, of the fear of consumption and stomach trouble, also of female trouble of twenty years' standing. In a short time we got a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and have never had any desire for medicine since.
We have had many troubles to meet, but these all teach us to follow more closely the instructions in our text-book.
