A Lecture

Correspondence

Mr. Edward A. Kimball lectured here on Christian Science July 24. He was introduced by Judge Peter J. Shields of the Superior Court, who said in part,—

I take much satisfaction in presenting a man of such distinction to an audience so representative. This audience represents persons of various positions in society, of many religions, of most of the professions. Some of you have come here with full faith in the doctrine which our guest will expound, some with inquiring minds to hear the proofs he will present in support of it, others in doubt and criticism. But all have come in respect and in that broad spirit of tolerance which is the proudest product of twentieth-century progress. The world has now reached that point where no person with any claim to breadth or culture can afford to say of anything when first advanced that it is not true. When Christ came and taught charity and brotherly love, he was scorned and crucified, but his word has come to be the universal law. When Columbus claimed that the earth was round, he met with no belief or sympathy, only with ridicule. One hundred and thirty years ago, when the fathers of our country proposed a government founded upon freedom and in which all should be equal, the astonished world denied its possibility, but it came to pass and has blessed the world. So when slavery was challenged it was said that it always had been, and consequently was right. But Lincoln wrote the verdict of a more enlightened morality when he proclaimed emancipation, and, better taught, we now all marvel that it ever could have been. I need not multiply instances. They are so numerous that they have taught the world tolerance, and the folly of denying a cause unheard. So it is with Christian Science, we will hear its cause with respect and decide its claims in justice. If it is all wrong it will perish, if all right it will live; but, live or die, we will praise or condemn it according to its merits and not according to blind prejudice.—Correspondence.
