"Proof, security, and authority"

Chicago, Ill., July 25, 1905.

Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy,

My Dear Mrs. Eddy:—For many years my wife had been under a doctor's care. According to the physician's report, her case was one which awaited the knife as the only possible cure. My attention was then called to Science and Health. The first evening's reading of that book gave me the intimation that Christian Science is the truth which Jesus taught. Being a business man, and accustomed to having propositions, promises, and statements supported by proof, security, and authority, I required nothing less to convince me that primitive Christianity had been restored to a waiting world. I recalled the fact that Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." I saw clearly that healing the sick was one of the "fruits" or tests of the truth which Jesus announced to humanity. The giving of sight to the blind was another fruit, and making the lame to walk another.
