For many years prior to my coming to Chicago in 1901,...
For many years prior to my coming to Chicago in 1901, I had been trying to find pleasure and happiness in the flesh. I was given to the liquor habit, sometimes drinking to excess, was also a heavy smoker, although I saw that the life I was living would eventually lead me into total darkness, but I did not know what would take the place of these indulgences, or what I could do to overcome the habits. I left New York city and came to Chicago with the thought that if I were surrounded by new environment I could begin life anew. On arriving in Chicago I found that the old friends with whom I was to live were Christian Scientists, and I attended the meeting with them on the first Wednesday evening that I was in town. I was at once impressed with the truth I heard, and I have relied on Christian science ever since, with the result that it has destroyed all my false appetites and given me a peace I never knew before. The overcoming of the tobacco habit was a great proof to me of the power of Truth, for I had smoked almost continually and it was always in my thought. I continued to smoke for almost two years after becoming interested in this Science, but the appetite left me a year ago, and I have never wanted tobacco since. Many things come up for me to meet, but all error is quickly overcome when the truth is properly applied. I know that this truth does heal and overcomes all sin, and I am very grateful to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her writings, which open the Scripture to our understanding and show us the way.
