I have long felt it to be a duty I owe to God, to Mrs. Eddy,...

I have long felt it to be a duty I owe to God, to Mrs. Eddy, and to my fellow-men, to add my grateful testimony, to what Christian Science has done for us as a family. Four years ago last October, a friend, whose home is in New York State and who knew nothing of Christian Science previous to this time, came to visit me. She was taken with chills, which developed rapidly into inflammatory rheumatism of such a severe type that the physician who had treated her for several days said that her case was an extreme one, and that it would be weeks, perhaps months, before she recovered. At this time she was suffering greatly, and in her extremity she remembered that on the evening of her arrival husband had spoken of meeting a friend who had told him of his wonderful healing through Christian Science. He said he had not walked for over two years, and finding no relief from materia medica, he was persuaded by a friend to try Christian Science, which he did, and was quickly healed of this and many other troubles.

With my friend this was "God's opportunity," and it so impressed her, that after the doctor's verdict of trained nurse and hospital, despite my efforts to persuade her that she was too ill to be experimenting with something she knew nothing about, she insisted on my seeing the practitioner who had healed this man. I did so, and she came immediately. After putting away all medicines for internal and external application, and removing all the bandages, at the request of the practitioner I got my friend a nice substantial tea, which she ate without any ill results. All this I did in fear and trembling, not knowing anything of Christian Science myself, and not daring to think what the consequence might be. Finding, however, that she was much better next morning, I felt encouraged, and at the practitioner's request we went that day on our wheels to her home, which was four or five blocks distant. Every day after this my friend was able to be out, and in about two weeks was perfectly well.

The first evening she brought Science and Health to our home, I asked her if she would like to have me read to her, and I began at the preface. I have often felt since, that a new sense of life came to me with the reading of the first sentence. It certainly came as the first faint ray of dawning day to my consciousness, so faint that, as I remember it now, all the realization I had was a feeling of joy and gladness that I had read it, and a desire to read this book at every available opportunity. It has been my daily companion ever since, and through its teaching I have found a greater realization of health, happiness, freedom from anxiety, deliverance from a great sense of fear; also an understanding of Principle as the only governing power, which will solve all the problems that daily and hourly confront us. My husband, who was a constant sufferer from sick-headaches, is entirely free from them now. One of our children, who from infancy was subject to from one to three attacks of bronchitis every winter, has not had an attack since Science and Health has been studied in the home.
