The Cross

It was long after midnight and the room was silent save for the regular breathing of a sleeping child, whose mother was walking restlessly up and down the room.

The woman's whole heart had gone out in a prayer for peace, and she had heard a voice, "Take up the cross, and follow me." "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest."

There was no mistaking the call. A great light stole over her face, and there came the peace "which passeth all [human] understanding." She had said in her heart, "I will leave my nets and follow Him. Whatever God wants me to do, I will do."
