Christian Science came to me at a time when in physical...

Christian Science came to me at a time when in physical distress from nervous dyspepsia, accompanied with insomnia and extreme physical weakness and mental depression, a depression so great at times that a desire for death was difficult to overcome. My diet had become so limited through medical advice and fear, that I ate very sparingly of the simplest foods for a period of two years or more, the tyranny of which was harder for me to endure than the mere abstinence from usual foods. My healing was slow, and only came through a process of mastering each separate article of food I had discarded.

Besides dyspepsia, I was healed of chronic catarrh and an ingrowing nail from which I had suffered for twenty years, and on one occasion, but without avail, had the entire nail taken out. During some years of suffering I had the best practitioners of two schools of medicine, to several of whom I shall always feel indebted for their patient kindness and active solicitude.

If freedom from physical ills were all I owed to Christian Science I doubt if this testimonial would ever have been written, as I would have regarded it only as one does a system of physical healing, and while I would not withhold a formal acknowledgment of such relief, my heart swells with deepest gratitude since darkness and despair have been taken out of my life, and in their stead have come such joy, freedom, and peace, as I had come to consider only an illusion of boyhood. The measure of increased courage, the liberal estimate of my brother, patience under neglect and unfairness, and the mastery of appetites, of malice, envy, and jealousy already realized, has been such as to prove the possibility of ultimately obeying the Master's command, "Be ye therefore perfect."
