Two and a half years ago, I searched the magazines and papers for anything which might throw light on the problem of existence, and I found an article in the North American Review on Christian Science and eagerly read it. When I left it, it was with the strong hope that now I had found something that would lead me to the light. The following Sunday I attended service, and shortly afterwards purchased a text-book. The next two months I spent all my spare time in its study, often reading late into the night.
Just at this I visited some friends whom I had not seen since learning of this truth. They met me with the exclamation, "How changed you look!" and then commented on my improved physical appearance. This was the first intimation I had that the reading of Science and Health was improving my health. I was conscious of such a sense of freedom and joy because of having found the truth (I knew it was the truth from the first reading) that I never gave a thought to the physical healing. Since then, however, I have had many occasions to test its efficacy in healing, and always with success. I wish to speak of one occasion in particular, but before doing so, I want to give my impression of Christian Science literature.
After reading Science and Health, I immediately began to read our Leader's other publications, and finally the Mother Church Manual. The more I read the more I found myself thinking after this fashion, "These Christian Science ought to be wonderful people, they surely have no excuse if they go astray, safeguarded as they are." The wisdom shown in directing Christian Scientists to pray this prayer, "Thy kingdom come. Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!" (Manual, p. 57), impressed me very much and has been a great help to me.
