Searching and Finding

When our class was sent out to do service for Truth, it was with the thought, "You will need, in future, practice more than theory" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 281). These words were uttered by one who knew whereof she spake, and they certainly turned thought to God as the source of wisdom and the supply needed for our work. Mrs. Eddy's humble and entire reliance on God deeply impressed me, and gave a new and practical view of the relation of Christian Science to the all-knowing Mind.

In order to establish faith, and experience the joy of Divine guidance, this point must be individually tested, and not found wanting.

Shortly after, came the first opportunity to demonstrate the truth which had been taught, and to learn that one may ask for wisdom and receive according to the need. The case was a simple one, that of quinsy. The patient was subject to such attacks, which were accompanied by fever and suffering. The conditions were met as they appeared, but without the expected results. On my way to the patient the next day this determination came, "This is nothing but error, and I will work till it is destroyed." For an hour I prayed earnestly, casting out every possible opposing suggestion, still no change for the better. Then the thought that hate was holding the consciousness came to me. I could not find it in my own motive, and asked the patient if she were harboring hard feelings towards any one. No; it was not there. Turning to God with all my heart, I became firmly convinced that the world's hatred of Christian Science was being directed toward the practitioner to prevent the demonstration of truth. Unaided I should not have reached this solution of the problem, but I bear joyful testimony that immediately the presence and peace of God manifested itself to me and to my patient, who at once expressed relief, and rapidly emerged from a sense of illness into a normal condition.
