"On Earth Peace"

So long as war continues no one can claim that the moral and intellectual faculties of the race are greatly in the ascendancey, or that the animal does not dominate mortal man. A very interesting article which appeared recently in a Russian newspaper says, "A people cannot pass suddenly from a state of cruel barbarism to one of civilization by means of purely technical skill, without passing through the incomparable school of nineteen hundred years of Christianity, which, perhaps, is the most valuable possession in Europe."

It is no less interesting than encouraging to note that in the great crises of life, nations and individuals alike, turn instinctively to the teachings of Christ Jesus and admit that they are the true standard of living. The pity is that all do not better understand them, and find in Truth a ready and satisfactory solution for every problem of human existence. While strife goes on between man and man, it is likely to extend to classes and to nations, through the belief in conflicting interests. The Apostle James says that "wars and fightings" come from "the lusts that war in your members." All strife undoubtedly comes from our failure to realize that we cannot afford to sacrifice our peace of mind for any material consideration whatever. When through scientific understanding it is seen that every struggle should tend to overcome evil with good, it will also become clear that the undertaking must begin with the individual, and continue until the victory for right is gained. Then the efforts will be directed to ever-extending conquests, and new regions in human consciousness will be won for God and His Christ.

For the coming of God's kingdom millions pray daily, and yet the Psalmist said, "Thy dominion endureth throughout all generations." It therefore remains for mankind to recognize this "dominion" and obey its laws. To mortal sense, the strife is great and the entrenchments of error seem very formidable. For long ages, the indulgence of sin, and submission to sickness and death have seemed to constitute a large part of human experience, but when we are awakened by Christian Science we perceive that evil has no claim upon us because it is not of God. No one who understand and follows Christ's teachings, in the light of Christian Science, need fear for the future of mankind. In spite of all the strife which may arise, nay, even because of it, humanity will be impelled to turn to Truth to find rest from its ceaseless woes.
