The Truth Stated

The appended letter was recently published in the Los Angeles (Cal.) Herald, and in introducing it the editor of the Herald made the following explanation:—

"A few weeks ago Dr. buckley, the most prominent figure in the Methodist Conference, delivered a lecture in this city in which he vehemently assailed Christian Science and its followers. Dr. Buckley's lecture was reported fully at the time. The following apology for the faith that is in him, is from the pen of a well-known Los Angeles lawyer and successful man of business, who prefers to conceal his identity under the pesudonym of "Bagdad." It is said that there are now over three thousand adherents of Christian Science in Los Angeles, and among its members are many men and women whose sincerity and sanity cannot be questioned. Therefore Bagdad's defence of his creed commands the respectful attention both of a liberal newspaper and of all thoughtful people."

I am not a Christian Scientist; nor yet a Methodist, though from nine to forty-five years of age, I was considered a "consistent member" of that church. For some time I have studied Christian Science, and the Rev. Dr. Buckley's late lecture in this city convinced me that in the future possibilities, if not certainties, of this Christian Science departure from old lines of religious thought and experience, there must be that which may sap the foundations of Methodism. Otherwise one of the doctor's learning, wide influence, and high religious authority could not, even for the moment, lay off the Christly garments of fairness, gentleness, and love, wield the cruel weapons of ridicule and invective against a religious belief which is the mainstay of many of our best people.
