Letters to our Leader

New York, May 5, 1904.

Beloved Leader and Teacher:—I have just finished teaching a class, and during these lessons we generally have from one to three cases of impersonal healing. This time the claim healed was of such a peculiar nature that I thought you might be interested to hear about it. A young woman in the class had always been deaf in one ear, never having heard a single sound through that one ear. When she was born, or soon after, the doctor announced that she had only one ear-drum, and said that for this reason she never could hear except with the one ear. As she grew older, specialists verified the family physician's opinion, and she became so accustomed to consider deafness in that one ear inevitable that she did not ever speak of it.

During the very first class lesson, it seemed to her as if a bubble started at the base of her neck, and revolved round and round on its way to the ear where it burst. At the second lesson these indications were repeated with increased vigor and frequency, still she did not speak of it; however, at the third lesson, the movement of the bubbles was so intensified, that they seemed to come in a perfect rush. She placed her hand over her ear for a moment or two as if to steady it and when she removed her hand she found she could hear perfectly with both ears. "Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift," to the children of men. Divine Love verifies, through such healing as this, the statement made by you, dear Teacher and friend, in Science and Health, p. 493, "Christ can improve on a lost [or missing] sense."
