From our Exchanges

The work of Jesus was to win men. . . . It was to make every man realize in his own way and in his own degree what Jesus so perfectly realized in himself. He tried to awaken in men his spirit, so that they should see the world as he saw it, should know God to be their Father as he did, should have his steady faith and calmness, no matter what should come to them. That is the fulfilling of his religion.

Remember how it was with Jesus. Every advance was preceded by a period of struggle. Between the quiet days of Nazareth and his public ministry came the wilderness. Between the year of popularity and his going up to Jerusalem lay the sojourn in the north country. And in Gethsemane the spell and wonder of the higher fellowship with the Father beckoned, but was not at first attained. Times like these come to every man,—times when the support of the old is gone and the comfortable satisfaction of the new has not yet come. But times like these come to society, and such a time is this present. The Church has outgrown much that in other days was thought most important; and the coming glory beckons, waits.—The Christian Register.

While the population of London has increased about 500,000 during the last seventeen years, the church attendance has in that time decreased about 150,000, and the loss has fallen almost entirely on the Church of England. The Nonconformists are now in the majority. The population of the city is 6,240,336, while the number of worshipers on a Sunday is given as 538,477 in Anglican and 545,317 in Free Churches. As in American cities, where the wage-earning classes crowd the middle classes farther into the country, there church attendance is lowest.
