An Appreciation

When I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," it caused me much "mental pain." But as I discerned something of the truth, even in the passages not then clearly intelligible to me, and felt a strong incentive to "dig" in this book and the other writings of our beloved Leader, I followed the impulse with continual aspiration and prayer for divine illumination, that I might be called to understand them. It is remarkable that I should have thus prayed to understand a book, at a period when I had lost the sense of prayer, on account of my self-life.

By the assistance of prayer and patient reading and passing over any little objections and difficulties that stood in my way for the moment, I perceived that my sense of things was illumined. My understanding was opened, till at length I discovered the wonderful treasures hid in our text-book.

Having gained this understanding by prayer, I began the study of the Bible in the same way, and its spiritual meaning then came to my awakened thought. Under these circumstances, is it remarkable that the last part of our text-book should be named a "key"?
