True religion and true Christianity include practice as well as theory. Indeed, one can understand but a limited amount of truth without practice, for Christian conduct is essential to lift one to that spiritual height which is necessary to understand deeper things. One could not fathom the depths of spiritual truth without progress. The advanced lessons of spiritual understanding can no more be understood by one who has not practised the first lessons than the advanced lessons of mathematics can be comprehended by a pupil who omits the examples for practice.

Every undertaking which involves practice necessitates knowledge or science. While Christian Science does not pretend to accord with that which deals only with the material, it is in harmony with the spiritual truth which Jesus taught and practised; and it is but just to the scientific world to say that many modern physicists approximate very nearly to the teaching of Christian Science in its definition of the substance of the universe.
