With Open Eyes
We read that once as Michael Angelo passed along the streets of Florence, he noticed, lying among the rubbish, a piece of fine Carrara marble. Some unskilled hand had evidently been at work upon it, and its delicate texture bore the impress of coarse and uncomely features.
The passing crowd saw simply the failure of some poor workman, but the master's eye saw the possibilities of the stone; he had it taken to his studio where in response to his clear conception and skilful touch, the ugliness and deformity were displaced by beauty and grace.
The master's thought had transformed the unsightly thing, and in famed Florence, as "Michael Angelo's David," it has gladdened all lovers of art for centuries.
