It is the practical effect of Christian Science made evident in health restored and disease overcome that has first led the great majority of the thousands who profess this teaching to adhere confidently to it in physical as well as spiritual need. Reliable witnesses to this fact in almost every community verify beyond doubt the question of Christian Science healing.
The physical healing in Christian Science is, so to speak, but the externalization of a spiritual betterment, or regeneration of consciousness, due not to the operation of any human will or personal control, but to realization in some measure of the all-power, presence, and control of the One Divine Mind, the infinite God, or Good, and the consequent powerlessness and unreliability of any discordant opposite.
The mission of Christian Science is not alone to confer physical relief, but primarily to rule out of the nature and lives of men the plagues of fear, doubt, selfishness, and all other evil through the cultivation of hope, charity, honesty, and goodness, and this is accomplished through understanding faith in the ultimate supremacy of good in every man as the spiritual "image and likeness of God," notwithstanding the visible evidence to the contrary. As an incident of this better appreciation of the truth of man's relationship to his Maker, he finds himself improved physically as well as morally.
