The Healing Faith
Cohoes (N. Y.) Republican
To the Editor.
Dear Sir:—To show that "cure by faith" is not a new idea, as was pointed out in your issue of December 17, one need not go to Japan to investigate any "sect of Buddhists." Every Christian can turn to his Bible, where examples of such cures are recorded from cover to cover. The earthly career of the Founder of Christianity, according to the Gospel narratives, was marked by the spiritual healing of the sick, and his example was followed by his disciples and apostles and by the early Christians. Christian Science is a re-affirmation of this healing, and it teaches the modus operandi scientifically. According to the law of God in Christian Science, "faith" is advanced to understanding, so that whoever will sincerely and honestly seek this spiritual healing may apply it to his own needs and those of others.
There is a particular merit of Christian Science which must not be overlooked; namely, that it is not confined to any exclusive set or sect, but is for every honest person to learn and use.
Mrs. Eddy's personal experience led her to state, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science text-book: "The prayer that reclaims the sinner and heals the sick, is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him,—an unselfed love. Regardless of what another may say or think on this subject, I speak from experience. This prayer, combined with self-sacrifice and toil, is the means whereby God has enabled me to do what I have done for the religion and health of mankind" (p. I). To learn how to pray like Christians is it not necessary to study Jesus' prayers and to learn the meaning of his advice?
"What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."
