What is man?

Dayton (O.) Herald

Aside from the question, "What is God?" there is no problem of greater importance than the consideration of "What is Man?" For ages it has engaged the attention of both sage and philosopher, but its solution will never be gained so long as we view man from a material standpoint, for the real man was, is, and ever will be spiritual, regardless of what the five physical senses may say.

The Bible account of man is presented from both a material and spiritual standpoint, one real, the other unreal, the latter to be laid off, being that to which the apostle Paul referred when he spoke of "the old man with his deeds" to be put off; the former will remain forever indestructible and immortal.

To mortal sense, the account of man and creation as given in the first chapter of Genesis seems lost, and man as God's image was unknown (in the full meaning of the term) until Jesus came, being the "first fruits" of the spiritual birth, reflecting the Christ-man of God's creating which must in the cycles of time be recognized as the true man, —God's own image.
