On the evening of October 27, 1898, I was on my way...
On the evening of October 27, 1898, I was on my way to church, and when crossing the street was knocked down by a runaway horse, picked up unconscious, and taken into a drug store. My clothes were very much torn, and all said it was a miracle that I was not killed. While I never had heard of Christian Science, still I insisted I was not hurt, and would not have a doctor examine me, but after being taken home, a doctor was called and did examine me. He found the left hip-bone split, and the spine badly hurt where the shaft had struck me; I was also hurt internally.
I was confined to my bed for about six months, only able to be up for about an hour at a time and then in constant pain. The doctor said I would be well in about six months, but at the end of that time, I was but a little, if any, better, and he finally told my mother he could do no more for me. I would have to call in a specialist.
My case had attracted great attention, and my church friends, as well as outsiders,.did all they could to have me see different doctors; however, I had but the regular practising physician and the specialist, who was one of the best in the city.
