While playing at school last winter, my daughter fell on...
While playing at school last winter, my daughter fell on the ice and loosened her two upper front teeth. When she came home her lower lip, which had been slit in four places by the lower teeth, was so swollen that it turned almost inside out. She had a bunch on the chin and another on the bridge of her nose. The loosened teeth looked twice their usual length; one hanging fully an eighth of an inch below the others and inward toward the roof of the mouth. With a great sense of thankfulness for Christian Science I took her to myself and shut out the distorted features, holding firmly to divine Principle. In the afternoon error claimed strongly for reaction, trying to mystify and frighten me by new developments. I began to think I must take her to a dentist and have the tooth attended to. My husband opposed this, he firmly believing that "all things are possible" in divine Science. The child was frightened at the thought and pleaded tearfully for the Truth alone, saying, "Oh, mamma, Christian Science has done so much for us, surely it can heal this."
Nevertheless I wanted to be sure I was doing right, and sought advice of an older and more experienced Scientist. After some conversation concerning the case and a rehearsing of various cases of surgery, the Scientist fully assured me that as long as all concerned agreed on Christian Science treatment, I had a perfect right to continue this method of treatment. I returned home thoroughly satisfied and found the child radiant. Her fear had been destroyed, the pain naturally subsided. Three days after, the face assumed its natural size, and the child attended school. The discoloration vanished in one treatment.
On the fourth day she said, "Oh, mamma, see! my tooth is in place." And I rejoiced in the realization that in God's universe ideas can never be displaced. The sixth day she spent among people who are not Scientists; attending the Sunday services at the Mother Church; hearing the beautiful lesson on "Love," the study of which the preceding week had enabled me to meet the error. This demonstration brought me such an understanding of Love and true gratitude that I am determined daily to show my gratitude by doing better.
